Pop star may be banned in Vietnam
Pop star Quang Dung and singer Nguyet Anh may face a ban from singing in Vietnam because they illegally participated in an overseas show.
The show in the US was organised by Thuy Nga Recording Centre, which has proven hostile to Vietnam.
According to an official of the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, although Vietnamese artists are allowed to perform overseas, if management agencies have evidence about activities against the Vietnamese state by overseas organisers, Vietnamese agencies have the right to not allow Vietnamese citizens to join the show.
He said Vietnamese singers who joined Thuy Nga’s shows violated Vietnamese regulations and they will be punished depending on their violation.
While waiting for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to release a decision, Quang Dung is preparing for his live-show entitled “Love Story”, which is scheduled for August 8 at the Hoa Binh Theatre in HCM City.
Ngo Thi Sy, Vice Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the ministry will organise a meeting, chaired by Deputy Minister Le Tien Tho, to consider the case of Quang Dung.
Quang Dung and Nguyet Anh’s unlicenced performances with Thuy Nga occurred over one year ago and were revealed when two sets of VCDs of the performances were illegally released in Vietnam in May and December 2007. On these VCDs, songs had negative images and words about Vietnam.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism asked local Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism to seize these VCDs and the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to consider mistakes of Vietnamese artists who joined this show, including Quang Dung, Nguyet Anh, Bao Yen, Y Phung, Kim Tieu Long, Phuong Thao, Ngoc Le, Ngoc Huyen, Minh Phung.
However, except for Bao Yen, Kim Tieu Long and Minh Phung, the remaining have settled overseas.
Since late January 2008, these artists have worked with the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The Department has suggested punishments for these artists to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
