General Description

In 1948 the Indochina Tourism & Exhibition Deparment bought the main part of the building consiting of the first floor and the ground floor, and rented in 30 years the remainder of 44 rooms.Mr Franchini Mathieu, a French Corsican, signed a contact to exploit the property within 15 years as from 1951.After the war in Vietnam, the French Government had to retreat and hand over Hotel Majestic to the Saigon Authority, but Mr Frachini continued business thanks to the still effective contract. In the due year of1965 the Saigon Authority assigned the in-turn exploitation to the National Travel Burreau and the General Deparment of Tourism Development.

In 1968 the Saigon Authority decided to add two more stories in which an international conference room, a restaurant, and some other guest rooms were erected.( The Hotel at that time was renamed as Hoan My- coming from the intials of Hotel Majestic).

FROM 1975 UP TO NOW

The Ho Chi Minh City committee decided to set up the saigontourist company to manage a lot of hotels among which was Hotel Majestic, now also bearing a new Vietnamese nam &ldquoCuu Long&rdquo.

At the time, Hotel Majestic had only 99 guestrooms of different types, an European restaurant, an Asian restaurant, an internation conference room, a souvenir shop, etc.

Through a long time of operation, the premises had been so much downgraded that the management of the Saigontourist company decided to invest in upgrading it. The upgradation took place step by step, and finally on August 1st , 1994, the hotel was completely closed for total renovation.

Aiming at recovering the classical style of Hotel Majestic 1925, the Saigontourist company had intructed its own construction firm to design and carry out the project with an investment of about USD 5,500,000.

On August 1st ,1995, Hotel Majestic resumed its operation, featuring 122 guestrooms including 30 suites, with additional services such as Business Center, Coffee Shop, Swimming pool, Gym room, sauna & massage ,etc.

In December 2003, the 8-storey Saigon Wing was join into the existing building, adding 54 guestrooms, Serenade Restaurant, Bellevue Bar and Spa area.

"All was perfect but the room located on the river side was very noisy: the sound proofing is insufficient and we were very disturbed by the noise of car and truck traffic in the street along the river side."

"We loved this hotel, its one of the better five star hotels in Ho Chi Minh. Loved the rooftop bar, except 2 of the nights we were there, there were weddings on, so the bar was booked out. I found this a bit annoying, they should have notified guests. But apart from this we couldn't fault it."

"The Majestic is an elegant early 20th Century French style hotel with old teak floors, large comfortable rooms, marble bathrooms with all facilities and a style of service we are fast loosing in Europe and the USA. There was a feeling of genuinely wanting to help and make our stay as comfortable as possible. The food too, was some of the best we tasted in the City. "

The Majestic was a highlight of our trip to Saigon. The standards and service were excellent - huge rooms, fresh fruit, coffee machine.....Make sure you book a room in the colonial original wing - we had a river view room which was gorgeous. The breakfasts were wonderful - large range and the best crossiants in Vietnam. Great location at the end of Dong Khoi. Pop up to the rooftop bar for cocktails and have a coffee in the foyer bar. Maxims next door is great for Vietnamese food and we had our best meal at the French Len tete (139 Nguyen Thai Binh St), about 5 mins away by taxi. Great coffee and cake shop (Highland Coffee) behind the opera building. Overall it was the best hotel we stayed at during our trip. Perfect.

Hi,

The Hotel Majestic was the last hotel we stayed in on our holiday, the hotel was really impressive inside and out. We were met by the driver at the airport and brought straight to the hotel, in a really fab car, it was quite Hot outside and Humid, so the reception area with the cool air conditioningwas a welcoming sight. Check in was very quick, on arrival to our room, to our surprise it was a better room, ( upgraded room) with a balcony, with a view of the river. The room was very large and very clean, it was charming, another area within the room with a desk and chair , & coffee making Facility, ( tasty coffee) the bathroom was quite nice too. The bed was huge, and very comfortable. I had to ring down to check the price, but as agreed was $199.00 ++, taxes.

The breakfast like everyone says, was great, had the usual, plus all different types of cheese, and of course the view was lovely from the roof top bar, warm, because its open air.

Overall, we loved the hotel, and found the location excellent, we ate in Jaspas which is Australian owned, and only up the road, and it was brilliant, with air con.

Its the perfect place to stay in Ho Chi Minh City.

Our stay at the Hotel Majestic was Fantastic!, the staff were very welcoming and helpful. On arrival we were hot and bothered after a long flight from Australia, our room was ready to go and we were quickly escorted upto our beautiful room in which we ended up being upgraded to a honeymoon suite, which was lovely!

The breakfast is very nice with a wide selection of cuisine to suite everyones tastebuds.

The hotels french colonial style makes this hotel a wonderful place to stay, it is a very clean and the central loation is perfect, for those visitors who like to be in the thick of it!

This hotel felt very tradtional. The location was great, the service was adequate, and the business services were acceptable. Internet service was readily available. For a clean room with a western bathroom and a great breakfast included, this hotel does the trick.

This is one of this once but never again places. Only after three rooms we were feeling comfortable with the room assigned for us. The place looks great but at the end the only conclusion to make is that the whole is poor, old glory. With a small pool and an even smaller fitness.

Stayed here in april 2005, colonial poolside for a $90.00 a night. The hotel has a great colonial feel and great outside pool just perfect for cooling off. The breakfast was included in the price and was generaly very good and always packed. Tip, order an omelete and watch the chef cook it for you, its a bit of an art.

Thats the good points. The bad points are i had problems with my booking in, money was hard to change especially with $100.00 bills, food ran out at breakfast and poolside bar was unmaned most of the time.

I checked the price of the same room last year only to see it was around $150.00 and this year a whopping over $200.00. I realise that the majestic has been upgraded to a five star but i feel the owners saigon tourist are just exploiting the guests. Hard to see how this has becom 5 star.

general ok experience at the price but not worth the latest published rate.....well overpriced.

Would stay there again but only if i got discounted rate.

Do your self a favour and stay at this hotel, we travel a lot worldwide and in good hotels, this one is right up there. Located overlooking the river in Saigon with a nice outside restaurant on the fifth floor ( Sort of away from the smog ).
The staff are fabulous, be nice and tip them, it pays ! We saved $150 each on a train trip to Nha Trang booking from the concierge. BIG TIP, book your flight to Hanoi from the concierge, only $100 round trip locally, cost us $250 each online from home.
We also got a free upgrade twice when we came back to the hotel from the lovely standard room ( About $260 ) to a penthouse suite of about 1k square feet with opera window, jacuzzi, etc, would have been about $800 per night.
They also have very cheap souvenir hotel towels and bathrobes so dont nick them !
This is a wonderfully friendly hotel with great staff, perhaps because it is State owned and does not have the dark claws of a Corporation all over it.
The pool is very nice and stays sunny all day, it doesnt look like it could by the location !
Each time we came back we were treated like old friends, which we now are.

Brain (Shanghai)

As a quick trip from the Shanghai cold during holiday break, we headed out to HCMC and Singpore, 3 nights in each.

This property is centrally located, by the Saigon river and within walking distances of many sights, shopping and restaurants, except for Chinatown which requires a cab ride.

Built in the mid-twenties, it retains much of its French influence in the common areas and room decoration. I would request a room in the original part, not the more recent addition and also ask for a river view. While potentially a bit noisier, the double-glazed windows work well.

Breakfast is taken on 5F in an area thats open to the outside and offers both covered and uncovered seating. A decent mix of both local and Western style food was on offer. On 8F of the extension, theres a lovely outdoors bar, with some covering, where one can eat, drink and watch the action on the Saigon River. There is also a pool which is located on the inner courtyard of the building and is a nice place to take a break from the heat and noise of the city.

The staff are helpful, efficient and have excellent English skills. They can also help you organise your travel or sightseeing needs. We had them arrange for a car to take us out to Cau Dai See as we did not want to go with a tour which would have included a trip to the tunnels.

Our room was large, comfortable, clean and quiet. It had a mini-bar, decent wall mounted a/c unit (not uncommon to older hotels in Asia) and a generous sized bathroom with full bath. I did not have a need to hook up to the internet although it was available I believe through a wireless connection.

During our time in HCMC, we did visit some of the other "top" hotels, non-US Chain, and were happy that we selected the Majestic. They did everything very well at this hotel and the location is the best. Highly recommended.

Duck (Smithfield ,VA)
Email: 73duck@hotmail.com

The Majestic is clearly the Grand Dame of the so-called colonial hotels in Saigon (sorry, Im old school). Its location is simply incomparable; it overlooks the Saigon River and the best shopping in the city is right around the corner. We were booked in a Colonial Riverview Deluxe room on the 4th floor of the original part of the hotel; subsequent additions have been made and blend in almost seamlessly. Our room was huge, high ceilings, had much of the original Art Deco motifs, and we enjoyed a walk-out balcony overlooking the river. The only downside to the room is that the plumbing seemed circa 1925; the bathtub drained very slowly and there was a slight septic smell in the bathroom. I brought it to the attention of the front desk on several occasions and they always promised immediate action, but it never seemed to get any better. Breakfast is served on the 5th floor in an open-air arrangement overlooking the river that newer hotels, e.g., Riverside Renaissance, Legend, etc., cannot possibly match. Since we stayed there over Tet, we had to pay for the "compulsory New Year Gala dinner," but in hindsight, although it was fairly expensive ($77 USD per pax) it was quite a spectacular affair, complete with dragons, dancers, water puppet shows, models, folk music, and a huge buffet with non-stoop complimentary beverages. From the open-air bar area, most people had a commanding view of the fireworks display. All in all, a night we wont forget anytime soon.

Peter (Durham)
Email: pjdurham@gmail.com

We stayed at the Majestic for 5 days in January and had a fantastic time. The hotel itself is beautiful with the added bonus of a rooftop bar and a rooftop restaurant for breakfast which really added to the experience - watching the hectic traffic below while you eat your breakfast is an experience I wont forget.

But my praise really goes to the staff, while we were there it was my partners 40th birthday and we left all his birthday cards on the desk in our room while we went on a day trip - the maid saw the cards and alerted the reception staff. When we got back that night there was a bouquet of flowers and a birthday cake, iced with my partners name and birthday - it just took our breath away. Possibly one of the nicest things we have ever experienced and wed like to thank all the staff for making his birthday one to remember.

The Majestic is a lovely hotel in one of the best locations in Ho chi minh for exploring the citys sights. But most of all the staff are terrific and you really feel like you are welcome and not just passing through. Id definitely stay hear again and would recommend it to anyone. Still not sure why there was a giant Mickey Mouse outside the main entrance? Think it was part of the Tet celebrations - year of the Rat?

For anyone who wants to experience the colonial charm of a bygone era in Vietnam, this is the place to stay. The hotel is full of beautiful details in both the lobby and rooms. We had booked 3 deluxe rooms, but then got two free upgrades to Majestic Suites on arrival -- fantastic! A lazy breakfast on the 5th floor patio overlooking the river was just as memorable. Service was excellent. We will definitely stay at the Majestic the next time we visit Saigon.

Grabber (Zurich)

We booked a room at the Majestic after traveling around Vietnam for a couple of weeks. Being tired and ready to collapse, arriving at the Majestic to hear that we were upgraded to a 100 sqm suite was more than pleasant. The room was great, the service excellent. Furthermore, the hotel is close to the downtown area. Unlike other hotels from large chains, this hotel (while maybe not as chic as a 4 seasons) has still a nice colonial feeling to it with class and style. Not too big, but with live music in the downstairs bar and a open breakfast buffet overlooking the river there is not much more you can ask for to enjoy Saigon. We will definitely stay here again next time. Only small problem: I wish they had more traditional Vietnamese food on the menu.

Terrific hotel in an ideal location in the centre of Ho Chi Minh city. Staff very helpful and friendly, rooms excellent, very well supplied with toiletries, etc. and a good mini-bar.

Pupsmear (Australia)

Our family spent four nights at the Majestic Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City in late Jan. It was to be an indulgence for the last stop of an 18 day Vietnam vacation where we had mostly stayed in delightful, inexpensive small hotels paying around $40 a night per room. As we were two adults and two children we usually needed two rooms which at the Majestic came to US$320 a night plus 15% (theyve gone up since) instead of the usual $80. We were prepared to pay that for an up market city experience and particularly for use of the swimming pool after a day on our feet in the heat. It kind of paid off there though the pool was a little claustrophobic. The Majestic was not the panacea I had hoped for. Our rooms, across the hall from each other and nicely appointed I must admit, were directly under the kitchen. The constant chopping and banging sounds began early morning and continued till late at night. We had specifically requested quiet rooms and knew then that we were off to a bad start. We were all moved to another floor and away from each other where our new room had a rattling, noisy air conditioner. Two days in a row we returned at 4pm to find the room unserviced. My husband then became ill from tainted bacon at the breakfast buffet (he knew the moment he tasted it) and spent most of the rest of the time in bed. The lobby decor is dated but not in an interesting way that is derivative of the original style of the hotel. It calls itself 5 star but it is not in that league. I would not recommend this hotel. There must be better value for money in HCMC...or stay in a smaller hotel where you wont resent paying so much if you have an ordinary experience.

WI (Middleton,Wisconsin)
Email: witraveler333@hotmail.com

We recently stayed 2 nights at the Majestic Hotel in HCMC. It is a classic hotel with a great location. We have stayed there a number of times in the past 10 years and since our last visit in 2005 there has been more re-furbishing going on. The lobby and the elevators all seemed to have received attention and breakfast has been moved to the 5th floor which allows you to enjoy the outside and also look down at the traffic (street and river) hub-bub. The rooms really vary in size - this time we were in a smaller room overlooking the pool courtyard. That was fine as some of the larger rooms on the riverside can be noisy. Our room was comfortable and the bathroom was quite nice except for the shower/tub arrangement. The shower was a hand-held in the tub which is okay but the temperature/water controls were dual instead of one to blend the temperature plus there wasnt a conveniently located bracket to place the shower device. As a result, it took considerable talent to not freeze or burn yourself and also not drown the bathroom!
The staff is friendly and helpful; there are 2 roof-top bars and one in the lobby along with several restaurants. The business center is minimal but the internet connection, while not free, is fast. The location is great - easy walking in the downtown area. HCMC is booming and its great to see this classic hotel holding its own with all the newcomers - helps retain a bit of the quaintness of Saigon.
